Road Map for Your First Move

With a clear plan you can effectively manage tasks, stay on schedule, and avoid last-minute rushes or oversights. This guide aims to provide you with a comprehensive roadmap, offering clarity on what needs to be done and when ultimately giving you control over the purchase of your new home with confidence and efficiency.

Two months before Moving Day (depending on your situation)

  • Sorting, Purging, Tossing and Donating
  • Start with less used areas of the house and work towards your most used
  • Organize your belongings into packed, trash, and donate piles
  • Schedule donation pick-ups or drop-offs according to availability
  • Discard your trash pile during your weekly garbage day or drop off to dump
  • 1-800-Got-Junk will pick up
  • Need help packing and organizing? Ask us about our helpers

Six weeks before Moving Day

  • Arrange dates to cancel or transfer utilities (water, electricity, natural gas, etc.) and services (phone, cable, subscriptions, etc.) at your current home
  • Check your mail for whomever would need to be notified of your new address; bank accounts, government, accountant, doctors, insurance, vet, childcare
  • Movers contacted for the big day! They may have to schedule your move over a couple of days
  • Arrange babysitting for kids, pet sitters for your furry babies and a hotel in case we need to overnight before possession. A hotel or a place to stay for a few days is often a very convenient option to have a peaceful restful night’s sleep.
  • Schedule a buyer visit to measure out any furniture you want to keep or buy, you are allowed 2 visits (one preferably closer to the closing date)
  • Make note of any renovations or changes that need to be made and contact multiple contractors for your second visit.

Ask us about our extensive list of contractors we recommend.

One month before Moving Day

  • Purchase supplies (boxes, wrapping paper, bubble wrap, tape – we have included our convenient organizing system for you!)
  • Pack every day! Leave your most used items for the end.
  • Try to keep your boxes in one area. This will minimize the time the movers have to go from room to room. Remember time is money! Organization saves time and money!
  • As you empty a room, clean it up and close the door!

One week before Moving Day

  • Start to disassemble furniture. Remember to keep instructions and tiny pieces in a labelled and sealed clear plastic bag or reusable container. If you need help, we have assistance for you!
  • Pack up everything but essentials
  • Create an overnight bag
  • Clean your new place (if you have access) we offer cleaning services!
  • One to two weeks before closing arrange your second buyer visit to ensure the house is in the same condition you bought it in. This includes fixtures and any other chattel/item agreed on in the APS.

Moving Day

  • Stay Calm! You have everything organized for the last two months!
  • Enjoy the movers doing all the heavy lifting but be on standby for any questions or concerns
  • Say goodbye!
  • Get ready for your next adventure!

After Moving Day

  • Clean your new palace or hire it out to cleaners to deep clean and sanitize your new home.
  • Check filters and schedule maintenance service for alarms, furnace, air conditioner, garage remotes, smoke detectors
  • Unpack!
  • Enjoy your new home!
